grandparent’s love

Here’s something I haven’t figured out yet. Grandparents. And grandkids. I’m not a grandma and even though my mom was 40 when she became a grandma, I think I’ll wait a while yet!

Mary And Elijah

For several years now, I have asked many grandparents about the special love and connection between them and their grandchildren.

Here’s one of the best answers I received from a spitfire grandma with a lot of energy who lives in southeastern Pennsylvania.

“As a parent you are trying your best to keep your kids alive and not mess them up. As a grandparent, you don’t have that pressure. You just get to love them, spoil them, and have fun together.”

Have you ever watched it? It’s a love filled with….

milky way candy bars on the kitchen table
trips to the family cabin
time for snuggling together with a book
peanut butter ice cream cones at Reeser’s Soft Ice Cream
a box of toys on the living room floor
amusement park rides
home cooked Sunday dinners

Grandparents have 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 in the Bible to back them up on this one. Paul, as he is talking to the church, describes love.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

Have you experienced that love? I hope you have.

Searching for wisdom and asking for grace,

Jody
